This digital illustration was made by artist Verónica Silva, for the Halloween.
The Celts used this period in which nature "died" or hibernated, being reborn again in the spring, to also let bad customs die. It was a period of reflection and giving thanks for what they had at the moment, anticipating the severity of winter.
It was also a period in which the veil between our world and that of the dead disappeared, hence seats were placed at the table for those who had already departed.
Later, the Catholic church tried to overshadow this pagan celebration (as they did with many others), with Pope Gregory declaring November 1st as All Saints' Day, right after these 'fiery celebrations'. From then on, Samhain became All Hallow's Eve - which evolved into Halloween.
Whether you celebrate the pagan version, the Catholic version, or both, I hope you enjoy the best of both. 👻
